Our tour to Pertuis in France
Fraternité and fun in France for the Covenant Youth Choir
So… after all the cake sales, Christmas Fayres and sponsored walks:
The Covenant Youth Choir finally enjoyed their first overseas tour when they visited Pertuis during May half term 2014. The visit aimed to give the choir an opportunity to sing to a wider audience and to collaborate with other young musicians.
After travelling via the Eurostar and TGV to Pertuis, the choir spent time visiting the beautiful city of Aix en Provence and Cezanne’s Atelier, which is situated just outside the city centre. The twinning committee of Pertuis entertained the choir for dinner and ten pin bowling later that evening.
The next day saw the choir shown around the town of Pertuis and then rehearsing in the Conservatoire in the afternoon. The choir performed a ‘Showcase’ in the evening in the Chapelle de la Charité, to a large audience, who enjoyed the mixture of choral, duets, piano solos and group pieces. The young members of the choir excelled themselves and introduced the audience to a less traditional style of choral music than is often heard in France. The two songs sung in French, from the film, ‘Les Choristes’ were especially popular.
The second concert was held in the village of Grambois, setting of the film "La Gloire de Mon Père" and were treated to a typical Provencal thunderstorm. In just 20 minutes, the temperature fell over 10 degrees and roads quickly became partially flooded. Nevertheless, the turnout for the concert was amazing with the local church packed full to hear the Orchestre Garance, the local choir and an inspiring half hour set from the Covenant Youth Choir. All the musicians joined together at the end of the evening to sing extracts from West Side Story and received a standing ovation at the end.
As the group made its way home, the young members of the choir were already asking ‘When can we come back?’ The residents of Pertuis had certainly shown them a very warm welcome and it is hoped to visit again soon.
The choir wish to thank all those who have supported us with fundraising over the past few months , including Councillors from East Hants District Council, Hants County Council, our own Parish Council, our parishioners, friends and family. What would we do without you!
