The Covenant Youth Choir was established in 2009 to serve young singers and musicians in the Alton area. Set up by members of St Lawrence Church Choir, the choir aims to encourage an appreciation of singing a wide repertoire of musical styles, both secular and religious. The choir is open to all, whether they are members of the church or not. We sing at all sorts of occasions including concerts, weddings and the occasional service. We encourage all our members to sing to the highest possible standards as well as produce their own arrangements and compositions. Membership is free and all that is required is a singing voice, enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard.
The choir serves Alton and the wider area and currently has over 20 members with a wide range of voices and musical ability. Young people generally join us at the start of Year 7 (Secondary) at the age of 11. We strongly encourage them to stay until they leave Alton College at 18.
We have sung in a variety of different settings and events including weddings, confirmations and concerts, including collaborating with ‘Cantique’, a local chamber choir, and singing in Coventry Guildhall at a wedding reception.
We have held 4 of our own concerts, three of them at Christmas, and a list of our repertoire appears elsewhere. We have sung sacred and secular music, ranging from Bob Chilcott’s ‘A Little Jazz Mass’ to ‘Run’ by Snow Patrol. Singing with us improves musical, literacy and language skills; we are just as likely to be singing in French as in English!
